As an alumnus, faculty member, and Veteran, Lucas Sutton is an integral part of the Ƶ community.
Lucas is a 10-year Navy Veteran, having served as an Electrician’s Mate overseeing nuclear power distribution on submarines. After the Navy, he built generators for companies. From a military family, Lucas believes in defending our freedom. He says applying to Ƶ with VA benefits was worry-free.
“I can look at what we are teaching with fresh eyes and address real-world skills.”
In Fall of ‘23, he graduated with his bachelor’s in Electrical Technology (ELTB) after earning his associate degree in Electronics, Robotics, and Drones (ERD). He is also a full-time instructor, teaching six classes in these areas.
Movie Consultant for Robot Dog Spot on “Good Burger 2”
Lucas is the resident expert operator of “Spot,” the iconic yellow robotic dog students see roaming the campus halls. Students often react with surprise, not knowing Lucas is controlling it. Spot has become a well-known fixture in the dining center and at events. This summer on the EG campus, Lucas was the consultant for Spot during the filming of the movie “Good Burger 2” — and was known as the “Robot Guy” to the production team. In fact, he and Spot were just featured in a TV commercial promoting Ƶ’s new Engineering bachelor’s programs.
A passionate electronics instructor
Lucas’ favorite part of being an instructor is seeing students get excited about robotics. “Students love working with the drones and Fanuc robots. I also teach them the importance of understanding the electronics behind the robots.” He appreciates hearing students’ feedback, developing new ideas and implementing them in the labs. “I can look at what we are teaching with fresh eyes and address real-world skills.”
“Career Services has more jobs available than students to fill them.”
What careers are open to students studying electronics? “Career Services has more jobs available than students to fill them.”
Lucas not only brings expertise to his teaching but approachability. During Ƶ’s summer high school camps, his ERD classes are always a highlight with students.
